Have Cell Phones Become Personal Tracking Devices? - TIME
proves where the phone is, not the user...
eg. recently, a friend in thailand had their phone stolen by a criminal. she had one of those fashionable glitter (fake diamond) studded phone straps hanging from her pocket, as u do, lol.. anyway, the career crim promptly set about calling & sending sms to her contact list, until finding relatives, or close friends... making threats, blackmail, etc regarding reporting the theft...
no doubt, he then proceeded to do illegal business using the id of the legal owner. this creates fake diversions for investigation, or worse sets up innocent people, where corruption exists. eg. there was a recent arrest of a t/com network engineer for using verified customer data. how many other cases exist of staff with access to verified id, who then pass on to associates, or sell customer data?
this poses a number of obvious legal issues regarding matched verification & defeats the purpose of phone/sim registration.
